BOOKS ABOUT HOMESCHOOLING
A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning is a book that I refer to year after year. It offers practical advice on how to implement the Charlotte Mason educational philosophy into your homeschool.
The Three R’s by Ruth Beechick was the first book I read about homeschooling and probably the resource that has had the greatest impact on the way I teach my children. I still love her simple approach to teaching the basics even after all these years of homeschooling.
The Read-Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie is an excellent resource that explains the many benefits of reading aloud to your children from good quality literature.
PRESCHOOL
Rod & Staff Preschool workbooks are my favorite resources for teaching preschoolers.
LEARN-TO-READ / PHONICS
The Leap Frog Letter Factory video is by far the best resource for teaching letter names and sounds. All 4 of my children learned their letters with this video just by watching it. This is the original 2003 version, which is far superior to the newer Leap Frog videos.
Happy Phonics by Diane Hopkins is a gem of a resource that I used with my child that struggled to learn to read. It includes fun games for every new phonics sound learned. It’s perfect for hands-on learners and doesn’t feel like work to a child that is struggling. Plus, it totally works!
Explode the Code phonics series has been something I’ve used with all my children. They aren’t your typical, boring workbooks. They have unique drawings, funny sentences, and are very effective for teaching phonics and spelling rules.
LANGUAGE ARTS
McGuffey Eclectic Readers – Reprints of these classic 1830s readers have been something I use year after year. I use them primarily for copywork and dictation, which is the way I teach writing and spelling.
New Language Exercises for Primary Schools – These classic reprints of C.C. Long’s language arts books are for grades 1-4. This is my favorite grammar resource for elementary ages.
MATH
Saxon Math is my favorite math program because it works! We’ve tried many math programs and Saxon has been the one that we’ve had the best results with.

Nicole the Math Lady is an online subscription with videos of Nicole teaching all the Saxon math lessons from Math 3 all the way to High School Advanced Mathematics. This is a fantastic resource if you use Saxon.
BIBLE
I use the free YouVersion Bible app to study God’s Word with my kids. Check out my post, “The Best Free Family Bible Study App” to learn more about how we use this fantastic resource.
