Welcome! I am so glad you’re here.
My name is Tracy. I’m a former classroom reading teacher and tutor, turned homeschool mom. I have 4 children, with the oldest in college, and the others in 10th, 6th and 4th grades. We started homeschooling when my college-age daughter was in preschool and have been doing it ever since, so over 15 years now.
What You’ll Find on the Happy Homeschool Mom Site
This website was born out of my desire to be a blessing to other homeschool moms. My posts focus on these 4 topics:
- Homeschooling Tips – these are things that have helped me over the years.
- Free Resources – these are free videos, homeschool curriculum, or supplementary materials that have been useful to me.
- Homeschool Curriculum Reviews – these are my opinions about the curriculum I have used with my family.
- About Homeschooling – this is general information about homeschooling, like the benefits of homeschooling and how to get started.
Some Background About Me
I’ve been married for 22 years to my husband, Silas. We live a half-hour from the Northeast Florida beaches, so we spend time on the weekends living like we’re on vacation.
Homeschool Techniques I Use
Regarding homeschooling, I love to research educational techniques. I’m eclectic in my curriculum choices, but I lean heavily towards a Charlotte Mason style, with lots of living books, copywork, dictation, and narration. However, we do use textbooks sometimes, too, so I’m not a Charlotte Mason “purist.” I try to incorporate interest-led learning whenever possible to encourage a love of learning in my children.
Former Teaching Career
In my former teaching career, I was a reading teacher and tutor for children in a remedial school. My training prepared me to teach in a multi-sensory way to cater to all learning styles. I like to share some of these teaching tips in my posts. For example, here’s a trick to try if you have a child that struggles with “b” and “d” reversals: “Help for b and d Reversals with ‘Beady Eyes Glasses’ Trick.”
Faith
I rely on the Lord daily for grace and strength. Homeschooling isn’t always easy, but I know God has called me to it in this season. There were many years where I felt like I was in “survival mode.” Homeschooling through those difficult years taught me to rely more fully on God for strength and to look to Him for creative ideas and solutions for how to make it work. I’m not enough, but He is. He is strong where I am weak. He multiplies my efforts. He meets all of my needs according to His riches. I feel blessed beyond measure to be able to homeschool my children.
I want to help other homeschool moms thrive, not just survive. I hope you’ll comment on my posts about what you’re learning along the way as well. Blessings to you! Love, Tracy
