Music Lessons for Free Part 1 – Drums
In this post, I’ll share some amazing, free resources that my 12-year-old son has used to learn to play drums for free. Also, I’ll share a video of my son drumming at the end so you can see how he has progressed using these free resources!
Drumming for Beginners
Two years ago, my son expressed some interest in learning to play the drums. He started his drumming journey by pounding on 10-gallon buckets and my pots and pans with a basic set of drumsticks.
The primary resource my son utilized to learn to drum was Drumeo videos on YouTube. He spent hours learning techniques from the masters on this channel. Here’s a great video for beginning drummers with tips for getting started if you don’t have a drum set!
Another YouTube channel that my son loves is Stephen Clark, The Non-Glamorous Drummer. Here’s an awesome beginner video for learning to play drums with just a practice pad (this is the one we have).
Next Steps
Once I knew he was serious about drumming, I decided he was ready to graduate to an electric drum set (here’s the one he bought). Now that he understood the basics and owned his own drum set, he started learning one song at a time. The best way to do this is to watch YouTube drum tutorials for that specific song. The first song he learned was “Raise A Hallelujah.” Here’s the video he watched to learn the drumbeats and flow of the song.
Where We Are Now
And finally, here’s a drum video my son made! He recently sold his electric drum set and purchased a used acoustic set. Click through to watch his drum cover of the song “My Testimony.”
